Alfaz del Pi...Looking closely
(Benidorm) Alfaz del Pi is a short bus ride from Benidorm and provides a great insight to ‘real’ life on Spain. Best known nationally for its annual Film Festival it is split into two areas. Traditions and fiestas are fiercely protected by the townsfolk and in the centre of the town as you would expect is the church and the town square, with the pine tree from which the town takes it’s name (Alfaz of the pine) taking centre stage. This paved forecourt hosts all the important occasions in the townsfolk’s lives; weddings, Christenings, Holy Communions and deaths all witnessed from the boughs of the pine. In March the townsfolk will gather under its shade once again for the Easter procession on Palm Sunday, which falls this year on March 17th. Dressed in their spring finery and bearing elaborately weaved palms they will parade the streets of the town lead by the priest and a donkey, simulating Christ’s journey into Jerusalem. Like all Spanish traditions, it’s a treat to watch, if only to see the children in the their new frocks! Head for the church square at midday, the procession takes place at the end of mass. The Beach Rather confusingly, the beach area of Alfaz del Pi is called Albir and as such is often confused as a completely different town. Which in most aspects it is; Albir is packed with non-Spanish residents who have chosen to live in Albir because of its fabulous micro-climate and location. It is also currently enjoying a healthy increase in tourism again because it’s close to everything its giant neighbour has to offer but visitors can enjoy a calmer atmosphere. Both sides of the town are a great place to spend a day, or indeed a whole holiday, jump on the number 10 bus and go and meet them for yourself. |
