The size of the island obviously never alters but what does is the recorded information.  The size varies depending on which pamphlet you read.  Thus, according to the numbers that appear in different publications, its size varies anywhere from 56,000 to 72,000 square meters (m2).

Official errors in the transcription and measurement can be blamed however it seems that the Council knows best.  The official size is 63,500 square meters according to the good book issued by the City and written by sociologist Jose Antonio Núñez de Cela.

In the first survey carried out during the last century, Property 6,896, volume 144, book 46 states the small barren island has a surface of five point six hectares of rocky ground with little vegetation, that is to say, 56,170 m2. Somehow this has ‘morphed’ over the years to become 63,500 m2.  Perhaps the modern, more accurate techniques have given a more accurate assessment. 

In 2002 and until the present time, the successive editions of various unofficial documents list 72,600 m2.  The explanation of this amazing growth of the island is firstly due to incorrect measurement, second an error in the transcription and third, according to the tourist office, “Nobody cares and nobody cross checks.  Why would they?” 

The company who operate the franchise of marine excursions to the island assures us in its pamphlets that the island has a surface of 6.57 hectares.  The only data that has not changed over the years is the height of 73 meters.

Unless of course you are a ‘scuba’ diver and want to add the 30 metres below the waterline!
