Benidorm’s areas
(Benidorm) Benidorm is split into several ‘barrios’ or areas, which are nick- named according to their location; from the ‘Rincon’ which means corner, which refers to the most eastern part of the town nestled under the hillside, across the New Town, the Old Town, the Poniente and finally the ‘Cala’ – the small cove occupying the most western side of town. But most of you are probably staying in the Rincon, teeming as it is with hotels. It’s also home to hundreds of bars and entertainment venues as well as some top tourist ’hot spots’, including Mundomar, Aqualand, Benidorm Palace, our very own Roundtown Tourist Information Office and the indoor market.
Indoor Market. The Indoor market is one of the town’s few covered attractions, making it a popular choice to escape bad weather, or at this time of year, to shade from the sun. You can get most things there from a haircut to a pork chop and since it’s a firm favourite with the local housewives, you can rest assured that the prices and the produce are good. Intitially opened to provide the town’s growing workworce with their daily groceries in the seventies, the stallholders struggled to survive in the nineties as the big supermarket chains monopolized the market but thanks to the arrival of thousands of ex-pats to the area saved the day. Nowadays, the folk who run the stalls are as colourful as their produce and the way the Spanish, Brits, Germans and Belgians work together in harmony could teach the super powers a thing or two. Find the Indoor Market, or the Mercaloix as it is known, in the Rincon area, opposite The Nereo Hotel. It’s a great place to wander round for an hour or two, especially, dare I say it - if it happens to rain! |
