New Traffic Laws
New Traffic Laws
(Benidorm)   The new traffic laws unveiled at the beginning of the year have finally been put into action so beware – as at first glance the emphasis appears to lie largely on getting more money in by issuing more traffic fines (no surprise there!).

There are lots of minor changes but the biggest one to affect main stream drivers are;

Exceeding the speed limit. This will result in loss of points AND a monetary fine which will be calculated on a sliding scale depending on much faster than the limit you were traveling. So, for example in a 40km speed limited zone, if you’re traveling as fast as 60km you’ll get a 100 euro fine, up to 70km would win you a 300 euro fine, 80km a 500 euro fine and over 100km a 600 euros fine.

Programming your sat nav while in motion is now prohibited and could earn you a hefty fine and loose you 3 points, the same goes for parking in disabled parking space. Illegible number plates won’t loose you points but will earn you a fine.

How to Pay

Massive discounts apply to those who pay the fines quickly. 50% for those paid within 20 days – or you can pay on the spot using your credit card. Owners will be unable to sell their vehicle if it has four or more unpaid traffic fines. Other traffic infractions which result in loss of points only include; Not wearing a seat belt or securing children in car seats (-3 points) Not stopping at a stop sign, or giving way (-4 points) Driving under the influence of alcohol (- 4 points, up to 6 depending on how far ‘over’) Using a hand held mobile phone (- 3 points) In a further cost cutting exercise, there will also be less ‘drink drive’ controls, simply because there’s not the funding. That doesn’t mean you should feel free to indulge and get behind the wheel – remember in Spain 2 halves of lager are enough to send you over the legal limit.
