The first event was to officially inaugurate the recently completed sports hall which bears the NBA player’s name. Thousands of excited fans waited in the sweltering heat for more than an hour to greet their 7 foot (213cm) hero who arrived surrounded by a huge entourage and plenty of security and bearing his famous NBA signet ring.

The second occasion, later in the month, followed his return from South Africa, (where, together with another of Spain’s current hero’s and Wimbledon winner Rafa Nadal the pair turned up to show their support to the Spanish football team in the world cup final). A more informal affair, Pau drove himself to the aforementioned sports hall to play some ‘one on one’ at the Pau Gasol basketball ‘campus’. This week long event brought together basketball youths from all over Spain who had been selected to shoot some hoops with their hero and he didn’t disappoint, spending more than two hours on the courts training with the kids, showing his skills, and challenging them to reach his high five!

Gasol is currently in his eighth year in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and on Christmas Eve last year he signed a 3-year extension with the Lakers worth $64.7 million dollars.
