The Story of Big Jon from Altea
The Story of Big Jon from Altea
(Benidorm)  Five years ago, almost to the day, talented musician ‘Big John’ and his business partner Tony were having a day off. Relaxing, but out of fags, they decided to stroll across Altea to the bar they owned to get some.

It came as a bit of a shock when, on arriving, they realised that the place they had been working in up until a few short hours ago had in fact collapsed into a tangled mess of rubble. The place was more bomb site than boogie bar.

Without warning, three properties next to where building work was being carried out had simply ‘leaned over’ and fallen down and it resembled the aftermath of an earthquake. The previously supporting walls had been removed by the contractors and the whole main-street building had become unstable and subsequently collapsed. The police and emergency services arrived and, around the same time, €3,000 in stock and money in the till disappeared.

After the mess was tidied up and some degree of normality returned to the area, the legal wrangle began. As is the custom, no one was to blame, but everyone blamed everyone else. The Council refused to accept any responsibility or impropriety, the contractors approved by the Council did the same. A policy of silence and stonewalling by all concerned parties ensured that the whole disaster (for Big John at least) was ‘swept under the carpet’ and virtually forgotten about.

Five yeas on, Big John’s legal representatives have still not managed to crack the case and, despite emptying Big John’s meagre bank account, have failed to do more that shuffle paper. Five years on and one more election finds the same political party back in power, richer no doubt that the majority of the people they purport to work for. Big John is not confident that the same Mayor who failed to represent him in his hour of need will be more sympathetic this time around.

But, ‘hey-ho’ life goes on. During the last five years, Big John has survived sleeping rough in the winter in a graveyard, being robbed (not just by the lawyers) and many other trials and tribulations. He is not a man to give up easily.  For the more observant, you will have seen Big Jon and his rock/metal band ‘White Coast Rebels’ in the hit TV series ‘Benidorm’ where they play a Country & Western Band.

Nothing seems to get him down! Terrifying to look at with piercings, tattoos and shaven hair he embodies most of our bad dreams BUT, a nicer bloke you cannot wish to meet! Most of all – what a personality! How many of us could have endured all he has gone through and come up smiling…..not many.

Have a nice day!
