Irish Fiesta in Benidorm, October 14th – 17th
(Benidorm) Lovers of live music on the Costa Blanca are in for a treat in mid- October as Benidorm will dance to the sound of Banjos, accordions, fiddles and flutes; as well as takamines and telecasters. The Irish bars in the resort have come together to present a fiesta of Celtic folk, rock and traditional music and song – the first of it’s kind here in Benidorm. The party starts on Friday 14th and continues all weekend, finishing up in the wee hours of Monday 17th. The Costa Blanca can already boast a fine array of Irish musical talent. For the fiesta this will be further enhanced by the arrival of up to 40 traditional musicians from the Emerald Isle itself. Steve Martin, a local musician helping to organise the event, got the idea whilst on a trip back to Ireland earlier this year. “ I was lucky enough to get caught up in a “trad session” in County Clare and thought it would be brilliant to bring some of this magic to Spain” Steve told Roundtown. “I got talking to Kieran Kirby, from the local folk club, then put the idea to bar owners over here and it was well received by all”. Those involved are working together to bring all these fine musicians over, so that each venue can offer a full and extensive programme throughout the weekend – free of charge. “ It is an amazing experience not just to listen to this music but also to feel it and see it being created before your eyes. It can also make you a wee bit thirsty.....” adds Steve with a twinkle in his eye! The Music The music on offer will cover the full spectrum of Irish music and song. Trad sessions, with said fiddles, banjos, accordions et al. – driven by the rhythm of the mighty Bodhran; Traditional and modern folk songs - from way back through to heroes such as Christy Moore, the Dubliners and of course, Shane Magowan; and rock and blues from the likes of U2, Van Morrison, Thin Lizzy and Snow Patrol. The venues will also offer local or travelling musicians the chance to join in the fun with “busker’s spot”. |
