(Benidorm)  School starts for most primary school children in Spain on September 8th – but for mornings only from 9am -1pm as it’s still considered too hot for afternoon lessons.

Primary school is from age 3 to 12, and then children move to secondary school for a further four years tuition from 12 to 16. But if children don’t pass their annual exams they are obliged to stay behind, so it often takes several years longer for a child to graduate from secondary school.  Secondary school children have a more intense schedule; they go to class from 8am – 2pm, allowing them the afternoon free to ‘study’.
A recent study revealed that it costs parents an average of 700 euros per child to send their child back to school as here in Spain parents have to pay for all text books, exercise books and other work material. Uniform is not obligatory in most state schools – although this is changing as parents recognize it is a cheaper alternative for today’s fashion conscience kids
