Dates for your (Annual) Diary
(Benidorm) We constantly receive emails from readers wanting to know when this or that fiesta is happening … or worse, readers who complain they’ve missed a celebration. So here’s a handy list of the main fiesta dates in the area for the whole year – so you can stick it on your fridge and not miss a thing! The 5th is Spain’s equivalent to our Christmas Eve. It celebrates the arrival of the 3 kings with a majestic procession through the streets of the old town. Bright lights and colourful costumes light up the faces of the children as they wave from the pavements before heading home to bed. Next morning if they’ve been good the children will receive gifts from the Kings rather like Santa brings gifts on Christmas Day. January 6th is a national holiday. February Spain celebrates carnival season in February but with no specific date, you’ll just have to keep an eye out for the fancy costumes, parades and all night parties! March The Valencian region of Spain (that includes the Costa Blanca) celebrates ‘Fallas’ from 15th to 19th March. Here in Benidorm the event includes street parties, parades and spectacular costumes and culminates with the burning of the giant papier mache monuments that are built especially for the occasion. March 19th is also a national holiday to celebrate Father’s day in Spain. This year there is to be another fabulous Elvis Festival in Benidorm from March 30th – 1st of April. May is also the month the Holy Communions are celebrated in Spain – look out for mini-brides and boys dressed as sailors enjoying their big day! June June 23rd sees towns up and down the coast celebrating San Juan. Typically everyone heads to the beach for a picnic supper before lighting bonfires and paddling in the sea at midnight. This is the biggest beach party you’ll ever see and will be the highlight of your holiday. July For the third year Benidorm will host the ‘Lo cost’ music festival on 27th, 28th and 29th of July.
