Benidorm – 50 years in the making
Benidorm – 50 years in the making
(Benidorm) There is an interesting exhibition on display in Benidorm Town Hall detailing the urbanistic development of Benidorm over the last 50 years.
Considering the size of the city and the period of its growth – Spain was not long out of a dreaded civil war – the growth was surprisingly well planned; there are no dead end streets, for example, like you often find in other growing Spanish tourist resorts grown over the same period, or buildings squashed together. That’s because Benidorm was always planned to grow vertically so as many visitors as possible could enjoy a sea view and much attention was paid to keeping as much space between the buildings as possible to let the light in. The roads were planned as wide as they could be – indeed the six lane wide Avenida Mediterraneo which crosses the resort from the Levante to the old town was shown originally on plans as an eight lane road, but was reduced following public outrage because it looked like an aircraft runway! The locals couldn’t possible conceive a time when it would be needed … there were after all at the time of its planning only seven cars registered to owners in Benidorm! So any budding architects, or anyone interested in the history of the resort will enjoy seeing the plans and photos that show its growth from a fishing village to the tourist capital of Spain. The exhibition is on display in the Espai d’Art building which is by the port and the municipal market near the Parque de Elche (Dove Park) from 30th January until 23rd of February.
