Lookout Tower Restored
Lookout Tower Restored
(Benidorm) Despite what felt like sub zero temperatures on Sunday morning, around 300 people braved the icy wind to join the walk up to the newly restored lookout tower adjacent to the lighthouse in Albir.
The tower dates back to the reign of Felipe II in the 16th century and was built to protect our vulnerable stretch of coast from the constant pirate attacks. When a vessel was spotted, the watchmen had to light fires in accordance to the number of vessels that were approaching so that the townsfolk could head for the shore. The original tower stood some 12 metres high but only 4 metres has been uncovered, kept intact under centuries of debris. The restoration works are part of a bigger project to several parts of the Sierra Gelada national park in Albir which started with the newly reformed light house last year, and, together with the “We Love Sundays” campaign, are attracting new visitors to the area all the time – which is great news for the local economy. |
