The First Communion
The First Communion
(Benidorm) Every weekend in May sees thousands of children across Spain celebrating their holy communion. The nine year olds have been studying Catechism for three years in preparation for this, one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic church and the third most celebrated here in Spain after baptism and marriage. These days the event is like a mini wedding with the girls dressed as mini brides and the boys in sailor suits. Preparations for the event take months as parents deliberate everything from the invitations and guest list to the outfits and the venue for the meal – just like a wedding. The whole day costs a fortune – the girls frocks alone cost around 400 euros, then there’s outfits for parents and siblings, the flowers, the photos a sumptious meal outand take home gifts for the guest. But in a country where kids rule this is one of the nation’s most treasured traditions and hard times or not, the Spaniards would prefer to go without a lot of things rather than cut corner’s on their child’s ‘Primera Comunión’ so if you see them dashing about in their white suits and mini wedding frocks, give them a wave for they are mini stars for the day! |
