Three New Benidorm Projects about to Start
Three New Benidorm Projects about to Start
(Benidorm)

Hot on the heels of a handout form the central government of Spain, Benidorm, like every other town in the Valencian region, is now set to receive a windfall from the Valencian Government. Once again, the money must be spent on building projects to boost employment and the 14.2million on its way to Benidorm has already been earmarked for the following three works;
The lions share will go to sorting out the area of land adjacent to the Foites football stadium, known as Foites Park.

Currently a concrete landscape used only by skateboarders and to house the ‘other’ weekly Wednesday market more popular with the locals, this huge piece of land just back from the Poniente beach has been waiting for a makeover for years and the locals will be thrilled by the news. And the three projects that have been chosen to spend the money on. The first and most important is the Foites park behind the Poniente beach. Some of you may know this piece of land as it is where the ‘other’ Wednesday open air market is held every Wednesday (more popular with the Spanish locals), adjacent to the Foietes football stadium.
A total of 10.9 million euros will be spent on the 115,000m2 plot to create a magnificent park with 70,000m2 parkland complete with swings and slides and a lake in the middle. A 20,000m2 car park will make parking for some 650 vehicles, there will also be a skate park, fitness equipment for the over 50’s, a reading area and the whole area will be WI-FI “it will act as a lung for that side of town” said the Mayor of the most expensive of the projects
The second in line and at a cost of 1.6 million is to conclude the Poniente beach front makeover as the current works don’t include the final 200m stretch needed to join the beach to Elche park.
And the third project (brace yourselves lovers of the old town!) is to revamp the original town hall, again at a cost of 1.6 million. This ancient building which sits on the walking street, almost opposite the big chemist, was Benidorm’s first town hall when it was just a small fishing village and the Wlaking Street was the main road through the town (never knew that did you?) and the present council has decided that should be the beneficiary of the remaining money and will enjoy a makeover of its interior at a total cost of 1.6 million euros.
All of this is great news, lets just hope that these projects will start when some of the current ones are completed – although with a timescale of just 2 years to complete them (as indicated in the ‘rules’ of the funding) this looks unlikely. It looks like the old gag about the ‘crane’ being the most sighted ‘bird’ in Spain is about to be replaced with one suggesting the ‘Caterpillar’ being the most sighted insect in Benidorm!
