Spaniards defend Fireworks
(Benidorm) Councillors in town halls all over Spain put political differences aside recently, joining forces and voting unanimously in favour of a motion to the European parliament to ask them to reconsider their mission to reduce the use of unpowder. The latter is used in the aking of fireworks and every town and city in Spain uses copious amounts of them in every fiesta and major event; weddings, big sporting victories and even political wins are all celebrated with fierce, loud firecrackers. "Its absurd, ridiculous. Fireworks are in our blood" said an incredulous Spaniard on hearing the idea. the opinion of others they will go to extreme lengths to defend them. Not long ago the European parliament suggested that Spain cease to celebrate the Moors and Christians battles, that relives the Christians overturning the moors to regain power of the country centuries ago. Spain agreed to tone down the celebrations so as to avoid offending other races and cultures but flatly refused to ban them completely. Similarly, they appreciate the safety worries surrounding the gunpowder issue and have reduced the use of fireworks dramatically – until very recently a stream of bangers would be released at football matches across the nation following every goal! But the idea of banning fireworks completely is unthinkable. Isn’t it a shame we Brits don’t stand up and defend our traditions that others find so offensive? Instead, patiently tolerant as ever we’ve let other’s opinions get in the way of our heritage when we should have adopted the same stance as the Spaniards "If you don’t like it - you know what you can do!" Way to go Spain! |
