Benidorm’s Tram
Benidorm’s Tram
(Benidorm) One of the reasons that people like to come to Benidorm is that there is always so much to do. Having said that, if you feel the need to “stretch your wings” a little, and explore more of the coastal strip of the Costa Blanca, nothing could be easier thanks to our lil’ train. Benidorm’s train or ‘trenet’ (little train) station is located at the top of the Avenida Berniarda and is easily accessed from the tourist side of town on buses number 1 or 4 for the standard 1.25€ each way. The train is also known as the tram because the line is currently being updated and the train is making way for the eco friendly tram – which is where the common confusion comes in. The line stretches from Benidorm north to Denia in one direction and to different areas of Alicante city, south, in the other. The trains in the Denia direction (line 9), leaving Benidorm hourly-starting at 06.59am, and the journey takes just over an hour. The trains to Alicante leave every half hour starting at 06.35am with the journey taking around 75 minutes. And the good news it’s cheap! Return tickets whether to Denia or Alicante, are the same price of just 5.65€ return. The red (L1) line, if you make no changes, takes you to “Mercado”, in the centre of Alicante. Mercado means market but refers to the old food market. The stop before that is “MARQ”. This is the stop to get off to visit the acclaimed arqueological Museum and a great place to visit on a wet day! An alternative to central Alicante (and the shopping!) is to ask for a ticket to “Puerto del Mar”, when buying your ticket. This station is just five meters from the beach, right next to the marina of Alicante and boy are there some luxury yachts there! But you will need to change trains to get here. Get off your train from Benidorm at either “Lucentum” or “La Isleta” and wait for the next train (L4) with “Puerto del Mar” on the front. Easy! And it’s lovely strolling around the port, defiantly my favourite trip! The lines in total carried four million people last year - almost 10% of the population of Spain! This will increase even more when the link to the airport is completed – work on which is due to start in two years. Now the worst thing about the trains……They don’t have toilets! So perhaps it’s a good idea not to have 15 pints of beer before you set off! Have fun!
