Things to watch out for
| There's nothing like a recession to send the scam makers into overdrive -and relaxed holiday makers are easy targets for petty crime. For a town this size it has to be said that crime rates are low, nevertheless it's up to you to keep your wits about you. Watch out for: |
|
| Pickpockets
They usually work in pairs and 'Danny' will distract you with a simple question, whilst 'Reggie' hunts for your wallet. Another favourite is a seemingly 'lost' individual who spread a map under your nose shile you're sitting enjoying a cool beer and as you study the map you won't see his accomplice who will be swiping your valuables fron under it. Keep bags and wallets on your lap in bars and restaurants and never hang the over the back of your chair or place them on the floor. 'Potato' MenA pavement sideshow, you are tempted to bet on the pea hidden under the potato-walk on by, you cannot win and at best will feel threatened and intimidated- and worst you'll loose loads of lolly. These are also hot spots for pickpockets to nab your cash while you're watching the show. Short ChangingBrits have become the prime target for this scam because we're still relatively unaccustomed to the Euro. Favourite venues are dimly lit establishments, like bars at night so take a few seconds to check your change as later claims will not prove succesful. |
Money Exchange
Watch out for establishments claiming the charge 'no commission'. What?. These are businesses, not charities, of course they charge commission. Ask the cashier to write down how much you will receive for your cash BEFORE handing it over and as a guideline expect to pay about 2'5%, similar to in a bank. ATM Machines (Cash Points)These machines can easily be tampered with so if your card gets stuck, resulting in an "innocent" bystander offering to assist refuse their help-it's a scam. Use your mobile to phone the emergency help line clearly displayed somewhere on the machine to explain the situation. Your "helper" will soon disappear! Scratch CardsYou're handed a free scractch card and (surprise surprise) you've won! Before you can say "Where's my prize" you've been whisked across resort to claim your 'prize' a two hour seminar on the benefits of a time share.... if its your idea of fun, scratch away, if you'd rather be on the beach, say 'no thanks', and walk on. |
Well, we hope that we haven't scared you witless into never leaving your hotel room because that was not the point. We'd also like to stress that nearly all of these crimes are non-violent, they are simply easy ways of obtaining your hard earned cash but you know what they say; knowledge is power. Now that you know the scams, you have the power to stop these crimes happening to you. |
